The discovery of the truth is in the discernment of the false. You can know what is not . What is – you can only be. Knowledge is relative to the known. In a way it is the counterpart of ignorance. Where ignorance is not, where is the need of knowledge ? By themselves neither ignorance nor knowledge have being. They are only states of mind, which again is but an appearance of movement in consciousness which is in its essence immutable.

The very admission: ‘I am ignorant’ is the dawn of knowledge. An ignorant man is ignorant of his ignorance. You can say that ignorance does not exist, for the moment it is seen it is no more. Therefore, you may call it unconsciousness or blindness. All you see around and within you is what you do not know and do not understand. To know that you do not know and do not understand is true knowledge, the knowledge of an humble heart.

Nisargadatta Maharaj, from the classic ‘I am That’, p 384

Sri Ramana Maharishi

A woman, with her necklace round her neck, imagines that it has been lost and goes about searching for it, until she is reminded of it by a friend; she has created  her own sense of loss, her own anxiety of search and then her pleasure of recovery. Similarly the Self is all along there, whether you search for it or not. Again just as the woman feels as if the lost necklace has been regained, so also the removal of ignorance and the cessation of false identification reveal the Self which is always present – here and now. This is called Realization. It is not new. It amounts to elimination of ignorance and nothing more.
